I was born in Brooklyn and raised in New York and Connecticut. The first book I remember loving was If I Ran the Circus by Dr. Seuss, read by my Dad. Once I could read, I loved a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt, and then Anne of Green Gables. I earned a BA in religion at Dartmouth College, a PhD in American History at the University of Pennsylvania, and moved to Massachusetts in 1991. I have taught history and writing at several universities including Harvard, edited a policy journal, and am the author of US Television News and Cold War Propaganda, 1947-1960 (Cambridge University Press). Off the page, I have worked for environmental justice in my community, practiced yoga for many years and teach it, been happily married for a good long time, and raised two singular children.
